Distinct cytoplasmic staining was observed in several colorectal and prostate cancers as well as a few malignant melanomas and fractions of cells in cases of most malignancies. The majority of malignant cells were however weakly stained or negative.
Rare cells in a few cases of melanoma, endometrial, pancreatic and liver cancer displayed strong cytoplasmic staining. Several cases of prostate cancers along with cases of carcinoids were moderately positive. Remaining cancer tissues were mainly negative.

Entrez gene summary
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) family. The protein is expressed in a broad range of cell types, acts as a pleiotropic cytokine and is involved in the stress reponse program of cells after cellular injury. Increased protein levels are associated with disease states such as tissue hypoxia, inflammation, acute injury and oxidative stress. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2015]
